Health Ethics Symposium 2016

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

OVERVIEW:

The John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre is hosting a one-day health ethics symposium on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). The symposium will take place Friday, November 25, 2016 at the Lister Conference Centre, University of Alberta. Keynote presentation by Dr. James Downar will review key elements of the legal and policy framework for Physician Assisted Death (PAD). Other presentations will focus on understanding resuscitation and issues of life and death, autonomy and choices for both patients and health care professionals, protecting the rule of law and the vulnerable in PAD, the moral and clinical distinction between assisted dying and euthanasia, MAID for persons with mental disorders, and the relational perspective in patient autonomy for MAID decision-making.

SYMPOSIUM OBJECTIVES:

In June 2016 the Canadian federal legislation on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID, Bill C-14) was passed. This ruling has raised a lot of questions within the medical profession, among patients, family members and the public at large. The symposium will bring together experts from various fields to discuss key elements and challenges, highlighting ethical and legal concerns surrounding MAID.
